I-85 Corridor Light Rail Transit System |
Gwinnett Village CID, in partnership with the Gwinnett Place CID, has completed the first phase of a Light Rail Transit (LRT) conceptual study along the I-85 corridor. CAD rendering of the Gwinnett Village Station The study examined the feasibility of a LRT system that would connect the MARTA Doraville station to the Gwinnett Arena with 3 transit stops in Gwinnett Village. After examining heavy rail, light rail, and streetcar technologies, light rail was found to be the most cost-effective and efficient transit option. County-wide polls have consistently shown that residents see traffic congestion as the county’s biggest issue and with the majority favoring transportation alternatives such as rail to help mobility. Initial ridership projections have found that transit stations in Gwinnett would be some of the highest in the metro Atlanta region. With a grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), the CID is currently beginning the next phase of the study which will include detailed ridership projections and a market analysis that are required to apply for federal funding. LRT will provide much needed congestion relief and spur economic development, making Gwinnett an even more attractive place to live, work and play. | |
